Broadly speaking, a francolin is smaller and has yellow legs. It flushes when disturbed from the open areas where it lives and has a musical call. Underparts are white with dark streaks that vary from chestnut to black. The crown is solid chestnut, with a blackish eyebrow and a prominent white spot or streak behind the eye.
